Schematic illustration of ELISA. Antigens from the sample being tested are attached to a surface. The antigens will bind to the matching antibodies applied onto the surface. Antibodies are attached to an enzyme, and any unbound antibodies are eliminated. The enzyme's substrate is added in the final stage. If binding occurs, the subsequent reaction generates a visible indication, most typically by a change in colour change.
